BREAKING: El Salvador Blocks US Senator’s Attempt to Visit Deported Salvadoran 4/17/25

Democratic U.S. U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen reported Wednesday that Salvadoran authorities had blocked his visit to Kilmar Abrego Garcia who was wrongly deported and imprisoned in El Salvador’s most infamous jail.

Despite arriving in El Salvador on Wednesday to discuss Abrego Garcia’s release with senior officials, Van Hollen encountered a denial from Vice President Felix Ulloa who refused to permit him a visit or phone call with Abrego Garcia.

According to Van Hollen from the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, El Salvador’s Vice President Felix Ulloa stated that Abrego Garcia remained imprisoned because the U.S. government was funding his incarceration.

The United States government should not fund El Salvador’s imprisonment of a man who was unlawfully taken from U.S. territory without having committed any offenses.

Van Hollen who represents Maryland where Abrego Garcia lived served as a member of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

El Salvador’s government did not provide a response when asked for comments regarding Van Hollen’s visit.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt claimed that the Democratic senator was possibly spending taxpayer money to “demand the release of an MS-13 terrorist who was deported after being deported illegally.
